Slim Showcase: Miles Davis at the Blackhawk, San Francisco
"When asked if I would be interested in a collaborative effort between radioIO and Slim Devices that would allow to feature one of the most
significant benchmark events in jazz - I jumped at the chance. During the month of August, we will be featuring the recently release and re-mastered
'Miles Davis: In Person at the Blackhawk, San Francisco'—the complete set with 13 tracks previously unreleased."

Miles Davis—The Man
The second Slim Showcase centers around Miles Davis at the peak of his career, with one of the most outstanding rhythm sections ever assembled. The first live recording ever sanctioned by Miles, 'In Person' was recorded at San Francisco's famous Blackhawk Club, the oldest jazz club on the west coast, and one of the oldest in the united states. There are so many chapters to the story of this era and the timing of this release which validate its importance. First, it is Miles as a leader playing hard bop at the peak of more than forty years of development. Secondly, we can consider the incredible rhythm section with Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums) and Hank Mobley (Tenor Saxophone). If you are a fan of Miles' fusion efforts such as 'Bitch's Brew' or 'Amandla', hearing him in the heart of the hard bop era will introduce you to another spectrum of his ability. This event has a wealth of stories attached. Did you know that Miles, ever conscious of his style, wore a pinstripe suit for Friday evenings performance? Or that despite his legendary intransigence, he mingled with the audience signing autographs and answering questions? Were you aware that Miles would not make announcements to the audience, but would simply stomp the stage to get the band's attention? radioIO will be provoding the parameters in track titles which will specify not only the name of the song, but also which night the performance was recorded (Friday or Saturday). This way listeners can distinguish between verious versions of tunes that were played on both nights. This is just one way we can bring the unique character and enjoyment of live performances to Squeezebox listeners everywhere. |
The Blackhawk
From the start, the Blackhawk presented all the jazz stars, local and national, and until the Jazz Workshop opened in 1956 (with former Blackhawk regular, pianist Jeannie Hoffman). The small, ugly, 'Hawk was the Bay Area's principal modern jazz club outside the Filmore District. Dave Brubeck, Cal Tjader, Vince Guaraldi, Vernon Alley, Art Tatum, Johnny Hodges (with John Coltrane), Anita O'Day, Oscar Peterson, the MJQ, Chico Hamilton, Red Norvo with Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Barker, Miles Davis, Shelly Manne, Thelonious Monk, all played (and many recorded) there. The Black Hawk was located at the corner of Turk Street and Hyde Street in San Francisco's Tenderloin District. In May of 2004, a new building was constructed on the Black Hawk's old location, and is now the 222 Club. |
