SLIM DEVICES INTRODUCES SLIMSERVER
Offers tight integration with iTunes and easy remote streaming over the Internet
Mountain View, CA-November 18, 2003-Slim Devices, Inc. announced today the release of SlimServer 5.0, the Open Source software that powers their new wireless network MP3 player, Squeezebox. SlimServer runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, and Solaris, and is available as a free download from http://www.slimdevices.com/.
SlimServer streams the user's music library to Squeezebox or the original SLIMP3. Users, who manage their music collections with Apple's iTunes digital jukebox for Windows or Macintosh, benefit from even tighter integration. SlimServer accesses their music library, including iTunes' Smart Playlists, from anywhere and automatically updates when the user adds to their music library.
In addition, SlimServer streams the same music collection to any remote computer running software MP3 player, such as WinAmp or iTunes, over a home network or the Internet. Now users can easily listen at work to their music stored at home without copying files.
With SlimServer, users can:
- control Squeezebox or SLIMP3 network MP3 players;
- create and manage playlists through an easy-to-learn web interface;
- browse and search for genres, artists, albums, and song titles;
- listen to MP3 Internet radio-Shoutcast, Icecast, and Live365;
- shuffle a playlist and repeat songs;
- wake up to any song or Internet MP3 radio station using the built-in alarm clock on Squeezebox or SLIMP3; and
- support multiple devices playing independently or in sync, providing affordable whole-house audio.
SlimServer is the next generation of Slim Devices' SLIMP3 Server software, which has been downloaded more than 60,000 times. "This piece of software is incredible!" said Stefan Christiansson, a tech enthusiast and Slim Devices customer. "It allows you to bring your musical library to any corner of the world! The setup is as easy as 1,2,3 and suddenly your music is reachable from your office or home. The software is incredibly addictive and the chance that you will soon consider purchasing the hardware is overwhelming."
SlimServer includes contributions from a worldwide community of developers, who offer their time and energy to improving software they use and love. Open Source development results in faster improvement and a richer set of features than those of competing "closed" products. Slim Devices leverages the power of the Open Source community to create robust software that evolves in parallel with their hardware products.
